In legal terms, value vouchers, as well as service and product vouchers, are bearer instruments according to § 807 BGB (German Civil Code). They are subject to the general limitation period of the BGB. An unlimited value, service, or product voucher can be redeemed for three years.

In general, the customer cannot demand a cash payout of the purchased voucher. It is not possible to have the total value or the remaining value of the voucher paid out in cash. A voucher can only be exchanged for a product or service. For remaining balances, the provider must issue a new voucher or note the remaining amount on the existing voucher.
